COVID-19 CONCERNS

Mayor Nenshi worried about school reopenings

Jul 23, 2020 | 6:42 AM

CALGARY- Mayor Naheed Nenshi says the Alberta government’s plan to reopen schools in September isn’t good enough and the city could step in if it isn’t improved.

Nenshi says he’s nervous about schools returning to more-or-less normal, without mandatory masks, when daily infection rates are on the rise.

Premier Jason Kenney says shutting schools down indefinitely isn’t good for students’ mental health and life prospects.

He notes countries in Asia and Europe have allowed students to return to classrooms with relative safety.

The president of the Alberta Teachers’ Association says educators are eager to get back to work, but the United Conservative government’s plan does not include clear enough safety protocols.

Nenshi acknowledges that school reopenings are provincial jurisdiction, but says city council could discuss its options before school starts.
