Alberta to announce school re-entry plan this afternoon

Jul 21, 2020 | 10:43 AM

The provincial government is set to make a major announcement this afternoon.

Premier Jason Kenney and Education Minister Adriana LaGrange will update Albertans on the school re-entry plan for the 2020-21 school year.

The plan will be announced during a news conference scheduled for 3 p.m. You can watch it here once it begins.

Last month, LaGrange said the government was confident that students would be back in school in September for near-normal operations with increased health measures in place.

“I know many parents out there are really excited to have their children go back to school, I know teachers are excited to be back in the classroom with their children and I know that children have been missing their friends and their teachers and are looking forward to going back to school,” she said on June 25.

The province has been looking at three scenarios for school re-entry this fall:

• Normal school operations are able to resume

• Schools are partially re-opened, with some level of restrictions

• Teacher-directed at-home learning continues.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, will also provide her latest update on COVID-19 during today’s news conference.
