Lacombe County council approves funding for runway repairs at Lacombe Regional Airport

Lacombe County council has submitted its approval for runway rehabilitation to take place at Lacombe Regional Airport.

On Thursday, council passed a resolution that the Lacombe Flying Club, City of Lacombe, and Lacombe County proceed with the Runway Remediation capital project in place of the previously approved Runway Seal Coat capital project.

County officials peg the total cost of the project at $814,600 with $610,950 or 75 per cent of the total cost to be covered by a Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Program (STIP) community airport grant from Alberta Transportation.

The remaining 25 per cent of the costs will be allocated as follows: City of Lacombe – $101, 825.00 (12.5%), Lacombe County – $50,912.50 (7.25%), Lacombe Airport – $50,912.50 (7.25%).

Lacombe County’s portion of funding for the project will come through the County’s Airport Capital Reserve ($49, 747.46), with any additional funding needed ($1,165.04) to come through the County’s General Operating Budget.

County Manager Tim Timmons says the project has been part of the County’s capital plans for a number of years now.

“We decided as a committee late last year to submit an application to the province under their community assistance program for funding for the actual rehab of the runway that was really in a state of chronic disrepair,” explains Timmons. “It was a very expensive project, hence the reason why we had programmed it for a few years down the road. Just recently we were advised by the province that our grant application was successful and we’re moving ahead with that project probably later this fall.”

Timmons says with the City of Lacombe administering the project, he anticipates the City to put the project out to tender sometime in early August.

“Hopefully sometime before the snow flies and certainly before the middle of October we’re anticipating it being completed,” says Timmons.

With not only a cost savings component due to a government grant, Timmons notes the project will also result in a safer runway for all who utilize the airport.

“It will just provide a level of assurance for those pilots around Lacombe that are using the facility, as well as those from out of town utilizing the facility, that they will be able to land their craft in a safe manner,” says Timmons. “It’s certainly a big benefit to the City of Lacombe, the Lacombe Flying Club, and Lacombe County in seeing this project go ahead.”

Also on Thursday, council approved a number of amendments to the Lacombe Regional Airport Operating Agreement between the Lacombe Flying Club, City of Lacombe, and Lacombe County.

County officials say most of the amendments are incidental in nature and are intended to clarify and formalize existing arrangements.
