48 Street and 53 Avenue intersection receiving welcome improvements

Jul 9, 2020 | 1:41 PM

The intersection at 48 Street and 53 Avenue, located behind the Subway restaurant in Rocky Mountain House, has often been a complaint from locals, but now it will finally be seeing an upgrade.

Currently, traffic going east on 53 Avenue can only legally turn south down 48 Street, and anyone heading north or south on 48 Street cannot turn down 53 Avenue.

The new $125,000 upgrade will be bringing in a new walking path, a concrete swale to reduce flooding and will be removing the concrete structure in the middle of the intersection.

These changes will allow traffic to freely travel from 48 Street onto 53 Avenue and vise versa.

Rob Shanks, Director of Engineering and Operations for the Town, stated during the July 7 town hall meeting, “Although a study was done last year on the intersection and was inconclusive to our needs, we’ve all driven the intersection many times and it has caused a lot grief.”

Shanks had also brought up the reason for the intersections current state was because when the local high school was moved from its old location to the new one and the Tim Hortons was put into its new location, they wanted to alleviate some traffic from the intersection in front of the community centre.

The construction is expected to be completed by the end of the construction season this year and will be covered by the Town’s road reserves.
