Quiet Canada Day at the Alberta legislature

Jul 2, 2020 | 7:00 AM

EDMONTON- A small but steady stream of families turned up at the Alberta legislature wearing red and white yesterday, despite the fact that Canada Day festivities were cancelled there because of COVID-19.

Cheryl Tanouye was there with her husband, Matthew, and two kids, and said going to the legislature was a family tradition which they associate with being proud Canadians.

Alberta’s place in Canada has been a sore point for some in the province in the past year, with renewed discussion of separation.

Matthew Tanouye joked that he checked to make sure the maple leaf was still flying atop the legislature dome, and added that he doesn’t think separation is realistic.
