A Red Deer native and three prospects of the Red Deer Rebels are among 35 Western Hockey League players invited to attend Hockey Canada’s virtual national under-17 development camp as the road to the 2020 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge begins.

Nate Danielson of Red Deer was selected in the first round, fifth overall, by the Brandon Wheat Kings at the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft. The 15-year-old piled up 60 points in 27 games last season with Northern Alberta X-Treme Prep of the CSSHL.

Defencemen Jace Weir and Hunter Mayo were selected by the Rebels in round two in 2019, while forward Jhett Larson was picked by the club in round eight.

Weir had 22 points in 36 games playing U18 AAA (Midget) last year with the Okanagan Rockets.

Mayo had 32 points in 41 games with the U18 AAA Saskatoon Blazers.

Hunter, meantime, collected 37 points in 40 games with the U18 AAA Notre Dame Hounds.

All four are among a group of 113 players invited by Hockey Canada to take part in the camp.

“The national under-17 development camp is the first stage in introducing these athletes to the Program of Excellence, and it is a great opportunity for them to develop as players and learn what it takes to wear the Maple Leaf,” said Scott Salmond, senior vice-president of national teams with Hockey Canada.
