Downtown parking fees being phased back in

Jun 17, 2020 | 10:19 AM

The City of Red Deer says downtown parking fees will be reinstated in phases starting June 22.

The move comes as businesses are starting to resume operations in the downtown area in alignment with the Phase 2 of the provincial relaunch.

Fees and enforcement for downtown on-street and off-street parking were waived as part of The City’s initial response to COVID-19.

Reinstatement will happen as follows:

• Payment required for on-street meters as of June 22

• City lots continue to be offered for free until July 31

• Monthly parking continued to be offered for free until July 31

• Sorensen Station parkade would continue to be closed until July 31

Enforcement will occur in alignment with these dates, City officials note.

“We were pleased to have been able to suspend fees in the downtown and provide some relief to visitors and staff in the area during the initial phases of COVID-19. As the downtown starts to open up and businesses resume operations, it is in the best interest to begin reinstating fees for not only financial reasons, but to ensure parking is available to visitors who need it,” says Erin Stuart, Inspections & Licensing Manager. “Our approach balances the needs for those that may have returned to work in the downtown, with those businesses that wish to provide parking for their customers.”

Monthly parking will be reinstated, along with payment in lots, at a later date, when more of the offices resume working from the downtown.
