It has been announced that despite COVID-19 the high school graduates from West Central High School and St. Dominic Catholic High School will be able to celebrate their 2020 graduations.

On June 26 at 2:30 p.m. 38 graduates from St. Dominic Catholic and 104 from West Central will be taking part in their graduation ceremonies then driving with their families through a designated parade route.

The route will begin in the school parking lot heading south to 53 Avenue then west to 57 Street north, east on 57 Avenue, and south on 54 Street then finally east on 55 Avenue ending back at the schools.

Parade route for the 2020 graduating students.

The event was a joint effort between both schools and the Town of Rocky Mountain House which began discussing the topic at the first COVID-19 recovery task force meeting on April 27.

Mayor Tammy Burke and Town Councillors will be joining the parade with Rocky’s peace officers leading and following the route.

Public Works staff will provide traffic control at all intersections along the intended path.

The parade will be following both schools graduation ceremonies.

St. Dominic Principal Patrick Hughes stated that since it must be a no contact ceremony, students will have picked up their diplomas prior to the event.

He also mentioned that they own their graduation gowns and don’t rent, so they ensured that they were sent away and cleaned thoroughly back in January.

The annual graduation banquet for St. Dominic students this year will be organized by parents and is tentatively still moving forward this September.

West Central will be holding there ceremony in the school parking lot where each family and grad will park in their designated spot.

Each grad will wait in their vehicle until their name is called to cross the stage for their graduation photo.

To follow Alberta Health Services guidelines school faculty will not be shaking hands or handing over any items to students.

West Central Principal Stacey Wigley commented, “Although this doesn’t look like graduation from past years, it is an opportunity to celebrate our students’ achievements and wish them well as they leave us for the next stage of their lives.”

Anyone planning to partake in the ceremonies or watch the parade afterwards is being asked to take the AHS Self-Assessment test before attending.
