A well-known and respected central Alberta executive is receiving a prestigious award from Engineers Canada.

Russ Wlad, the executive vice-president and regional operation unit leader at Stantec, has been announced as the recipient of the Meritorious Service Award for Community Service.

The award is one of seven that Engineers Canada is announcing this month that recognize achievements, excellence and passion that make important contributions, such as advancing gender equity and diversity in the sector, as well as leading edge technology that saves lives.

“This year’s distinguished award recipients truly represent the transformative power of engineering,” says Jean Boudreau, FEC, P.Eng., President of Engineers Canada. “As educators, innovators, and role-models, they are improving the lives of all Canadians and demonstrating how vital our profession is in building a better world.”

Wlad, a central Alberta resident for over 20 years, supports many local organizations such as Red Deer Minor Hockey, Red Deer Boys and Girls Club, Rotary, United Way, and the Red Deer and District Food Bank.

He also led fundraising initiatives as committee chair to support the opening of the Red Deer branch of the Canadian Institute for the Blind, and acted as a committee member for fundraising events for the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation and 2019 Canada Winter Games. Wlad also sat on the games’ board of directors.

Additionally, Wlad has participated in initiatives for the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer and Big Brothers Big Sisters. He was the recipient of the 2019 APEGA Community Service award, and recognized by the City of Red Deer with a 2016 Mayor’s Recognition award in the Community Builder category.
