Despite a big drop last month, the second full month of the COVID-19 pandemic, year-to-date building permit numbers in Red Deer remain ahead of last year’s pace.

Building permits last month in our city checked in at $2.4 million compared to an estimated $15 million in May 2019.

The first five months of 2020 (January-May) have seen an overall increase in permit values compared to the same period last year, rising from $67.8 million to $89.9 million.

Thirty-nine permits were issued in May, compared with 132 in the same month last year. Notable permits include tenant improvements for BMO bank on Molly Banister Drive ($1,000,000), tenant improvements for retail cannabis store in Village Mall ($225,000) and exterior renovations for an existing commercial building in the city’s north end.
