Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League cancels 2020 season

Jun 4, 2020 | 9:10 AM

The Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League has announced the cancellation of its 2020 season due to ongoing public health measures in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a post to the league’s website, RMLL president Duane Bratt noted that the social distancing ban on gatherings of more than 15 people will be maintained throughout the summer, as per Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s chief medical health officer.

Cities including Calgary, Edmonton and Red Deer have closed their recreation facilities through the end of August.

“While there was some hope that some type of modified schedule could be maintained for July-August, that is no longer an option,” said Bratt.

Last Thursday, the Canadian Lacrosse Association cancelled all national championships for 2020.

“Losing an entire RMLL season is something that none of us has likely thought about. Then again, few of us would have foreseen the near total disruption of life in general,” Bratt explained. “This presents us all with a number of difficult challenges to navigate over the coming months. Among those is all of us working together to keep the momentum in our game and our league so we can build a successful comeback lacrosse season in 2021.”

The decision affects the Red Deer Renegades Jr. B Tier II male team, the Red Deer Riot junior ladies team and the Red Deer Rage senior women’s team among others.
