50 km/h too fast for residential?

Creekside and 54 Street could see speed reductions

Speed limit reductions from 50 to 30 km/h could soon happen in Rocky’s residential areas.

The subject was a part of the May 19 agenda’s Discussion Items section, and was brought forward by Councillor Jason Alderson.

Alderson began by referencing the many complaints he’s received by residents in Creekside wanting the speed limit reduced, suggesting it would be diligent to look at other areas as well.

He noted that peace officers are already waiting around Creekside most school days to ensure vehicles are slowing down when children get on and off buses.

Councillor Randy Brown mentioned that he’s heard more complaints about 54 Street than any other location in town.

54 Street already has multiple areas that slow to 30 km/h due to school and playground zones.

“Personally for me, I already see 54 Street as a 30 km/h zone,” commented Mayor Tammy Burke.

Responded Alderson: “Some people may think it’s overkill, but I think safety is more important.”

Administration informed council that the largest hurdle would be cost, as they would be required by provincial law to put up new signs everywhere the speed is changed.

Council floated the idea of reducing costs and confusion by potentially making the changes in every residential area. Reductions to 30 and 40 kilometres per hour were both suggested.

Council accepted administration’s answers as information and will potentially return to the subject for first reading at a later date after gathering opinions from local peace officers and residents.
