May 13, 2020 | 3:15 PM

Alberta’s chief medical officer of health and other officials will give an update on the COVID-19 situation in the province.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw will speak at a media conference scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. (Wednesday, May 13). Permier Jason Kenney is also expected to be in attendance to announce whether Alberta’s phased relaunch plan will commence as expected on Thursday.

The Alberta government is to decide today if it will move forward with the first stage of its plan to gradually ease restrictions that were brought in to limit the spread of COVID-19.

An emergency committee with the provincial cabinet met Tuesday night to officially decide whether reopening could take place as proposed Thursday.

If the province gives the go-ahead, restaurants, retailers, hair stylists, barbers, and daycares will be allowed to resume services tomorrow.

Restaurants, bars, pubs and patios would have to operate at half capacity with a minimum two-metre distance between tables.

COVID-19 case numbers and hospitalizations suggest the rate of infections from the novel coronavirus has flattened in Alberta.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Alberta had confirmed a total of 6,345 cases of COVID-19. Of those, 4,866 people have recovered and 1,361 cases were still considered active.

So far, 118 people have died of COVID-19 in Alberta.
