Sylvan Lake releases local relaunch plan

May 8, 2020 | 11:10 AM

The Town of Sylvan Lake has released its own local “Safely Staged Municipal Amenity Relaunch Plan” on the heels of the Alberta government releasing a province-wide strategy.

“The key message we need to get out to Sylvan Lakers, is that public health orders are still necessary and still required; the relaunch plan is subject to change should local health and safety conditions change,” Town officials say in a release. “Additionally, we continue to echo that of Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Chief Medical Officer of Health, in that non-essential travel is not recommended at this time.”

Stage one of the Sylvan Lake plan commences Thursday, May 14, and incudes the reopening of the following public amenities, with new health and safety measures in place:

– Sylvan Lake Off-leash dog park; open with sanitizing stations, and casual supervision to ensure public health orders are followed

– Sylvan Lake Disc Golf Park; open

– Sylvan Lake Skate and Action Sports Park; open with formal supervision to ensure public health orders are followed.

“When rolling out our local relaunch plan, we acknowledge that residents may compare it to other communities. However, our circumstances are very different,” notes Ron Lebsack, Director of Emergency Services.

“We have a unique challenge in that we attract tens of thousands of visitors to our community throughout the months of May through September. Because of this, we need to relaunch with much more caution, so not to attract those summertime crowds – potentially putting the health of our residents at risk.”

Playgrounds, public washrooms, and the public waterfront parking lots remain closed, and are a part of the Town’s Stage Two plans – triggered when the Province announces a date for their Stage Two.

“The Province has indicated open playgrounds require sanitization every three hours, as well as supervision to ensure Public Health Orders are in place; with 23 playgrounds in the community, we are simply not prepared for that at this time,” says Lebsack. “As for the washrooms and parking lots, keeping these amenities closed is key to keeping visitor numbers low.”
