Police-involved shooting near Leduc

May 6, 2020 | 11:00 AM

A 27-year-old man is dead and a police officer seriously injured following a confrontation near Leduc that came after a bystander was shot Wednesday morning in Blackfalds.

At 8:15 this morning, Blackfalds RCMP responded to a firearms complaint at a residence in Blackfalds. RCMP arrived and more shots were fired outside of the residence towards RCMP vehicles.

Police say a woman in the area, who was not connected with the incident, was struck by a bullet and taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Blackfalds residents living in the Lansdowne and Briarwood areas were asked to lock their doors and stay in their basements while this morning’s situation was underway.

RCMP say the shooter fled northbound on the QEII Highway before a spike belt was deployed, causing the vehicle to cross the median before it continued heading north in the southbound lanes.

Police say the vehicle came to a stop and a confrontation occurred, resulting in the death of the 27-year-old male and serious, non-life-threatening injuries to an officer.

“The Director of Law Enforcement has been notified and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the officer-involved shooting and the actions of police,” says Alberta RCMP Corporal Laurel Scott. “The RCMP will continue to investigate the events leading up to the final confrontation with police.”

ASIRT investigates incidents involving Alberta’s police that result in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct. It hopes to have further information to release later this week.
