Central Alberta Sexual Assault Support Centre

Virtual yogathon to bring awareness about sexual violence

May 4, 2020 | 2:39 PM

In celebration of the Central Alberta Sexual Assault Support Centre’s (CASASC) 35th anniversary, roll out your mat for a great cause on Saturday, May 23.

Join CASASC as they celebrate 35 years of prevention and education services in the community.

Presented by the Rotary Club of Red Deer Sunrise, join us for the virtual edition of the 2020 Central Alberta Yogathon.

The empowering celebration kicks off at 8:30 a.m. and runs throughout the day with two streams of yoga and yoga-related sessions, taught in a variety of styles led by certified central Alberta-based teachers. The event also features short fitness demos and a virtual wellness tradeshow.

Yogathon Event Coordinator Leslee Burton says the planning committee is excited the event continues to evolve and grow.

“Despite the unique circumstances presented this year, a high level of participation and community involvement is expected as we work to transform the Yogathon into a virtual experience,” said Burton. “Our goal is to bring 300 plus people together for a day of mindful movement and connection as CASASC celebrates 35 years of impactful work in the community.”

CASASC provides sexual violence support services to the central Alberta region, covering a service area spanning south from Wetaskiwin down to Carstairs and west from Rocky Mountain House to Hanna.

CASASC Executive Director Patricia Arango says the not-for-profit is thrilled to celebrate the organization’s anniversary through the healing power of yoga.

“We want to celebrate 35 years of service to the community with a reflection that personal care must begin with ourselves, as well as incorporating respect as an integral part of our lifestyle,” said Arango. “Please join us in generating positive memories in these times of the pandemic.”

The purpose of this event is to bring awareness surrounding not only sexual violence, but to achieve a balance of body, mind and spirit for attendees.

The 2020 Yogathon virtual experience is presented by the Rotary Club of Red Deer Sunrise and showcases a positive community partnership.

“The Rotary Club of Red Deer Sunrise is proud to support CASASC in their exemplary service to our communities through the fifth annual Central Alberta Yogathon,” said Rotary Club of Red Deer Sunrise President Susan Walker. “This event demonstrates common values around healthy communities, service and connection.”

The Yogathon is suitable for all ages and abilities.
