Discovery Wildlife Park opening as a drive-thru

Discovery Wildlife Park in Innisfail will be the first wildlife park in Canada to reopen to the public as the country and economy slowly begin to relaunch during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Head Zookeeper Serena Bos says the facility will reopen to the public as a drive-thru only starting Saturday, May 9 from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. daily.

Bos notes, however, visitors must remain in their vehicles the entire time they are on the property.

“We are following AHS regulations very closely to give you the best visit we can offer,” writes Bos on Facebook. “Zookeepers will still be putting in their best efforts to help you connect with the animals. We will not be open on rainy days and we encourage you to call ahead if you’re unsure if we will be open.”

Bos points out no foot traffic will be allowed on site, nor bicycles, motorbikes, RV’s or any other oversized vehicle. Four-wheeled traffic only under the drive-thru conditions.

“If we do not follow AHS regulations we will be shut down,” warns Bos. “We are not normally a drive through and it breaks our hearts to not be able to offer our regular animal presentations or bear safety presentations at this time. We understand the need for you to enjoy the outdoors and will do our best to give you an amazing animal experience!”

Other restrictions to keep in mind are that no dogs are allowed on site, washrooms will be closed to the public, and the gift shop & concession will be closed. However, curb side pickup for gift shop items can be arranged.

It’s hoped the new restrictions will help support the animals throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and get the Park through next winter until the facility is anticipated to re-open in the spring of 2021.

Discovery Wildlife Park is also working with other local businesses to provide visitors with incentives to spend time in Innisfail.

The Discovery Wildlife Park Campground will be opening on May 14. However, some AHS restrictions will apply.

“As AHS moves into Stage 2, we are excited to be able to offer our Zookeeper for a Day camps and other animal encounters,” adds Bos.
