City pleased with province’s phased relaunch plan

The City of Red Deer says it is closely reviewing the provincial government’s plan for relaunching Alberta’s economy to determine how it applies to the community and City of Red Deer programs and services.

“We’re pleased the Premier and our provincial counterparts have taken a phased approach to reopening the economy,” Mayor Tara Veer says in a statement. “The health and safety of our residents remains our top priority, and above all, we are still committed to mitigating further spread of COVID-19. In the coming days, we will work to review the provincial relaunch plan, and adjust local restrictions in Red Deer accordingly.”

“Playgrounds, courts, and skate parks will remain closed until we receive direction from AHS and the chief medical officer of health that it is safe to reopen them.” – City Manager Allan Seabrooke

The Province’s relaunch plan focuses primarily on a gradual reopening of businesses, services and outdoor activities. Also included in their plan is the potential opening of golf courses starting May 4, and Alberta’s online campground registration system starting May 14. The plan also includes adjusted restrictions for private and municipal parks.

“While the plan announced today provides a blueprint for the gradual return to regular operations and business, we know we still have a long road to full recovery,” said Veer. “Opening businesses will provide a much-needed boost to our local economy and will mean some people are able to return to work. We will continue to work diligently with our federal and provincial government partners to ensure our community has the supports we need to move forward under this new economic reality.”

With modified provincial restrictions now announced, The City of Red Deer says it will explore adjustments to restrictions in municipal public spaces. Many restrictions will remain in place, officials note, with restrictions only modified or adjusted in direct alignment with the provincial strategy.

“Despite the provincial relaunch strategy, we need citizens to continue to be vigilant in helping prevent the spread. We fully anticipate adjustments and revised restrictions as the plan unfolds, but this will only work if our community, and our citizens continue to do what is necessary as we safely work through the relaunch strategy,” said Allan Seabrooke, City Manager.

The City of Red Deer remains under a State of Local Emergency, giving the municipality access to additional resources, and special powers under the Emergency Management Act including personnel, from other orders of government if required.
