Transit users to board through rear doors only amidst COVID-19

Apr 28, 2020 | 10:08 AM

Red Deer Transit users who normally require the use of hydraulic loading ramps can book their essential trips on accessible shuttle buses, beginning Friday, May 1.

Boarding and exiting of conventional buses will be restricted to the rear doors to better enable physical distancing and provide increased protection for drivers.

“Previously we permitted customers with mobility challenges and those who use wheelchairs to board through the front doors,” said George Penny, Transit Manager. “The health and safety of our passengers and staff is our top priority. As the pandemic and our response to it evolves, we’ve determined that all passengers will be required to board and exit through the rear doors only.”

Transit customers who require the use of a loading ramp can temporarily book their essential trips by calling an Action Bus at 403-309-8400. There is no guarantee of preferred times and shuttles will be dispatched based on availability and demand for service.

In addition to the rear-boarding requirement for all passengers, Red Deer Transit has previously taken the following steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19:

Increased cleaning and sanitization of all buses, blockbing off every other seat to ensure physical distancing between passengers, reduced service hours and route frequency, and two-passenger maximum on Action Bus trips.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a dynamic situation and information can change quickly and often.

The City of Red Deer is prepared to make additional changes to policies as required in order to keep residents safe and reduce the risk of spreading the virus.
