Long line ups at Red Deer’s Waste Management Facility

Apr 28, 2020 | 9:57 AM

There is high traffic at the Waste Management Facility as spring clean-up is underway for many residents.

Adding to the increased traffic are additional delays caused by COVID-19 safety measures, in place to protect staff and customers, including required physical distancing for customers.

Normally during spring clean-up, The City implements measures at the Waste Management Facility to reduce the wait times for residential customers; however, with the physical distancing requirements, these measures cannot be implemented this spring.

Customers are asked to avoid making unnecessary trips to the facility during this time, and to use their green, blue and black carts as much as possible.

“For some, a trip to the Waste Management Facility right now might be needed, but residents will notice longer wait times,” says Tim Ainscough, Environmental Services Manager. “We ask residents to either make fewer trips to the site or reconsider trips that are not essential. We also recommend if the line-up is backed up onto 40 Avenue to return at a later time or another day when it’s less busy.”

As part of The City’s response to COVID-19, cash will not be an accepted form of payment at the Waste Management Facility.

Starting Wednesday, April 29, accepted forms of payment include debit, personal credit card, cheque and, for commercial customers, pre-approved accounts.

Residents who wish to drop off materials at the Waste Management Facility are asked to keep the following in mind:

Follow AHS guidelines and limit all trips to essential visits, do not visit if you are sick or self-isolating.

There will likely be longer than usual wait times due to measures that are in place to protect staff and customers. Please be patient and respectful to staff and others.

In addition, follow physical distancing guidelines and remain 2 metres away from others while on site.

The COVID-19 outbreak is a dynamic situation and information can change quickly and often.

The City of Red Deer is prepared to make additional changes to policies as required in order to keep residents safe and reduce the risk of spreading the virus.
