Former Sylvan Lake teacher honoured for contributions to education

A former Sylvan Lake teacher has been honoured posthumously for his contributions to education.

Daniel Moffet, who passed away on Dec. 27, 2019 at the age of 45, is one of 10 recipients of the 2020 Distinguished Service Award from the Youth Science of Canada.

Moffet is one of ten individuals across the nation who are receiving this award of their outstanding contributions through innovation, long service or leadership to an organization or its programs.

Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools is honouring Moffet’s memory and contributions to Catholic education during his time teaching at École Mother Teresa School in Sylvan Lake.

“Our colleague Dan was with us for a brief time before his tragic passing. In that time, we were graced by his joy and love for science,” says said Shane Chisholm, Principal at École Mother Teresa School. We were proud to get to know Dan. We were blessed by his service to students, especially in the field of science. God bless Dan.”

Moffet taught the following at École Mother Teresa School:

• Grade 6 and 8 Math (including French Immersion)

• Grade 7 English Language Arts

• Grade 7-9 Science (including French Immersion)

• Grade 6, 8 & 9 Health (including French Immersion)

• Grade 6, 7 and 8 Physical Education

• As well as coaching boys volleyball with Mr. Reinhart.

“We are so grateful to have had a teacher like Dan in our school division. We were blessed by his gifts and passion for science. He will be deeply missed,” said Interim Superintendent of Schools, Kathleen Finnigan at Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools.
