National Day of Mourning

Ceremony in Red Deer honours fallen workers

Apr 28, 2020 | 6:07 PM

April 28 is the National Day of Mourning.

A ceremony was held at the Red Deer Fallen Worker Tribute (Bower Ponds) on Tuesday to remember and honour those who lost their lives, suffered injury or illness on the job or due to work-related tragedy.

165 workers were killed in Alberta last year.

“Today is also a day that we can collectively renew our commitment to improve health and safety in the workplace and prevent further injuries, illnesses and deaths. One workplace death is too many,” say organizers of the ceremony.

This ceremony was attended by several local organizations, keeping social distancing practices in mind as they pertain to COVID-19.

A moment of silence was observed then Red Deer City Councillor Buck Buchanan read the City of Red Deer’s Day of Mourning Proclamation and played amazing grace on his bagpipes to complete the ceremony.

Wreaths were laid at the Tribute by Parkland Regional Safety Committee, Red Deer Construction Association, Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, Manufacturers’ Health and Safety Association and the Red Deer & District Labour.
