City: Common sense needed when getting rid of hazardous materials
The City of Red Deer is asking residents to use common sense when disposing of hazardous materials.
On Monday, crews attended to a location along Waskasoo Creek near Red Deer Regional Hospital where a mess had been made with what appears to be oil of some kind and expired furniture.
“It looks like motor oil in this case, and if so, that can be very detrimental to the environment. It can affect the habitats of fish and nesting birds. Then there’s the litter of a mattress and chairs. Those won’t break down. We’ll clean it, up but it’s unfortunate that people do stuff like this,” says Tim Ainscough, Environmental Services Manager.
“We’ve kept the landfill open so that whatever material you can’t put into the three-cart system, it can always be taken there and it’s only a minimum charge.”
