Staff to be increased at Alberta continuing care facilities

Apr 20, 2020 | 5:10 PM

Health Minister Tyler Shandro announced Monday that the province is taking more measures to stem the tide of outbreaks at continuing care facilities in Alberta.

Increased funding will be coming in the next few days to hire additional staff to address the higher workloads and a wage supplement of $2 per hour for health-care aides.

The province will also fast-track health-care aide students through their programs using paid practicums.

Shandro also announced $24.5 million is being advanced to operators to address immediate cost pressures.

“We’re confident that these measures will make a difference to ensure that our continuing care facilities in Alberta are as safe as possible,” he said.

NDP Seniors and Housing Critic Lori Sigurdson said in a release she’s relieved the government is taking action, but also frustrated given her party called for changes two weeks ago.

“The UCP have failed to bring in another crucial measure, which is a centralized provincial plan for staffing continuing care facilities following dramatic losses due to coronavirus infection, self-isolation, and the effects of the single-site employment order,” Sigurdson says.

Sigurdson also wants the government to clarify whether Monday’s announcement applies to seniors’ lodges in Alberta.
