Charges have now been laid in a shooting last week in east Red Deer that sent one man to hospital.

RCMP say Austin Sim-Pelletier, 20, is charged with attempted murder, seven firearms offences and being disguised while committing an offence.

Mounties say Sim-Pelletier remains in custody until his next court appearance on Apr. 21 in Red Deer.

On Apr. 9, at approximately 5:50 p.m., RCMP received a call of shots fired at a parking lot near Holy Family School in the Deer Park – South neighbourhood.

Further investigation revealed that two males allegedly met at the parking lot of Holy Family School.

Upon arrival, one of the males, a 20-year-old male from Red Deer, discharged a firearm, striking the other male, a 21-year-old male from Red Deer, before fleeing in an SUV. A number of individuals witnessed this incident.

Mounties say the victim was taken to hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Within a short time, Red Deer RCMP, with the assistance of the RCMP Police Dog Service and RCMP General Investigation Section, contained an area around the male suspect’s home in the Anders area.

The RCMP Emergency Response Team was deployed to assist with containment and negotiations. As a result of successful negotiations, the suspect surrendered on Apr. 10, at approximately 1:00 a.m., and was arrested without incident.

Police believe this to be an isolated incident and the public is not believed to be at risk.
