For two three-year-olds in Red Deer’s Eastview neighbourhood, their birthdays this week got an extra dump of awesomeness during the ongoing pandemic.

Kym Breitkreitz shares that her son Jacob and his best friend Lucas are both huge fans of garbage trucks.

Naturally, Breitkreitz reached out through the City of Red Deer to see if Waste Management could provide a little assistance.

“They showed up with two garbage trucks, tooted their horns, and raised their baskets much to the delight of the boys,” she says.

“They were so happy and excited. I think as parents we’re just blown away by how kind and excited the truck drivers were to be able to do this for the boys. Kids usually want the police, the fire trucks, and paramedics, so it was really nice to be able to highlight the people who work for Waste Management.”

Brendan Haring, Route Manager for Waste Management in Red Deer, said it was just as much a feel-good moment for the guys who went out with the trucks.

“Kids tend to maybe like the big shiny truck that goes by weekly, it’s not atypical around that age, with boys especially,” says Haring. “Also, it being a time when everyone is isolating and then we’re out on the front lines in a sense — not to the extent of doctors, nurses and police, but it is an essential service. It was a boost for the guys to go out and make those kids’ day.”

Breitkreitz adds an extra thank you to all essential workers.

“We know you’re putting your health at risk doing your job during the pandemic, and I think you all deserve a whole lot more props than you’re getting.”
