As many as 22,000 Canadians could die of COVID-19 in the coming months, according to the worst-case scenario set out by federal public health officials Thursday morning in Ottawa.

The Public Health Agency of Canada says short-term estimates are more reliable, and that up to 700 people could die by the end of next week.

Meantime, the unemployment rate in Canada soared from 5.6 per cent in February to 7.8 per cent in March as the economy lost one-million, 11,000 jobs. It’s the worst single-month change over the last 40-plus years of comparable data. Economists warn the April numbers will likely be even worse.
