Government announces infrastructure plan to get Albertans working during pandemic

The Alberta government says it is allocating almost $2 billion from the 2020 Capital Plan to get thousands of Albertans back to work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Premier Jason Kenney and cabinet minsters announced details of the plan during a news conference Thursday morning.

The province is doubling the capital maintenance and renewal (CMR) funding in 2020-21 from $937 million to $1.9 billion by accelerating the capital plan.

The government says this will allow them to act quickly and work with companies across the province to keep their workers employed during these challenging times.

“These infrastructure investments will be focused on projects that can be actioned quickly,” said Kenney. “By doubling our capital maintenance and renewal project funds, we will deliver much-needed improvements to important assets, keep companies operating and most importantly, keep Albertans working. As the weather improves and buildings are empty, now is the perfect time for us to act.”

114 projects are currently in planning and/or in design. There are also 95 projects currently in construction, including 27 schools and nine bridge and road projects, not including capital maintenance and repair.

Numbers released Thursday by Statistics Canada show Alberta’s unemployment rate for March as 8.7 per cent, up from 7.2 in February.

Kenney said earlier this week that Alberta’s jobless rate could reach as high as 25% due to the pandemic.
