Town of Sylvan Lake temporarily lays off 64 employees

Apr 2, 2020 | 12:30 PM

The Town of Sylvan Lake is the latest local municipality to be laying off part of its workforce due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a release, the Town says 64 employees are enacting the “Temporary 60-Day Layoff Process” for 64 if its employees.

Town officials say the move allows these employees to access Employment Insurance or the new Canada Emergency Response Benefits. The Town says it also allows them “the opportunity to easily add them back onto payroll at the end of the 60-day process, if we deem that is the best course of action.”

“We have an excellent team built up here at the Town, and we want to ensure it stays that way,” says Danny Scott, Director of People Services. “The COVID-19 outbreak has led to a mass interruption of our normal day-to-day activities, but we are working closely with all employees to assist them through it all. Additionally, we continue to evaluate staff levels, as the COVID-19 situation develops.”

The Town of Sylvan Lake has now closed all municipal buildings and facilities to the public. Access to the Waste Transfer Site and West End Recycling Station is also closed. All playground structures, the off-leash dog park, picnic shelters and the skate park are also closed to the public.

The public can still reach the Town for general inquiries by phone (403-887-2141), email (reception@sylvanlake.ca), or online at www.sylvanalake.ca/Report-it. The Town of Sylvan Lake and Town staff continue to operate and provide municipal services while maintaining a limited service level. The phone number for Public Works (after hours emergencies only) is 403-373-7403.
