MLAs recalled to debate emergency legislation

Mar 31, 2020 | 11:57 AM

Alberta MLAs are back in the Legislature today to deal with emergency legislation related to the COVID-19 pandemic, how to support Albertans and the economic future of the province.

“Our government understands that this is a challenging period of uncertainty for many Albertans,” says Government House Leader Jason Nixon. “We want to assure people we are working quickly to ensure that legislation relevant to fighting the spread of COVID-19 and that our economy is set up for success once the worst of the virus passes. Albertans can be certain we are working diligently with the Opposition to address the challenges associated with COVID-19.”

The legislation that will be debated deals with issues such as the modernization of the Public Health Act and protecting residents of mobile homes.

An update to the management of well liabilities in Alberta will be tabled, aimed at helping the oil and gas industry rebound at the end of the pandemic.

““Effectively managing oil and gas liabilities, including orphan wells and sites, is important in maintaining our reputation as a responsible energy producer,” says Energy Minister Sonya Savage. “Enhancing the role of the Orphan Well Association plays a significant role in reducing the number of inactive sites in Alberta while at the same time creating jobs to support our economy. This ensures a sustainable oil and gas industry in our province for generations to come.”

Guidelines outlined by the chief medical officer of health will be followed as MLAs return to work, a release from the province states.

The government’s dedicated COVID-19 page has full information on social distancing, enforcement of rules and support available to Albertans.
