27 Albertans recover from COVID-19

The number of Albertans recovering from COVID-19 is growing.

On Thursday, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health announced 67 new cases of COVID-19 in Alberta, bringing the total to 486 cases in the province.

Only two of the new COVID-19 cases are in the Central zone, bringing the total to 37.

There are no new cases reported in Red Deer (16), Red Deer County (5), Lacombe (2), Olds (2), and Stettler and county (1).

The good news shared by Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, is that 27 Albertans have now recovered from COVID-19, an increase of 24 from the previously reported number.

“We are working on streamlining the process for reporting recovered cases,” Hinshaw said.

Those 27 recovered cases are included in the total 486 individuals who have tested positive in Alberta.

Of Alberta’s total cases, 34 are believed to have come from community transmission, an increase of one from Wednesday.

“That community transmission that is out there right now … that will drive even more cases in the ICU if we can’t get a handle on this. If we don’t take action now, if we wait until we’re in a situation where our hospitals are overwhelmed, it’s too late,” she said.

Hinshaw says that 21 people are currently in hospital with 10 people in the ICU.

There has also now been an online assessment tool developed for health care workers who are developing COVID-19 symptoms. The online page is expected to be up and running for Friday.

Hinshaw said that there are countless unsung heroes behind the scenes, mentioning lab techs, contact tracers, and all other health-care workers as those who are on the frontlines of the fight.

“This virus has challenged us all and so many have risen to that challenge with hope and resilience Our system has responded with strength and ingenuity, but I want Albertans to understand there will be challenges coming in the next weeks. We’ve all seen what happened in countries like Italy and Spain,” Hinshaw said. “We are doing everything possible to prevent that from happening in Alberta by limiting the number of people who will need hospital care by preventing the spread of this virus.”
