11 who attended Edmonton bonspiel test positive for COVID-19

Alberta’s chief medical officer of health has updated the case of western Canadian doctors who attended a recent curling bonspiel in Edmonton with someone who later tested positive for COVID-19.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw says 11 of 47 Alberta health-care workers who attended the three-day bonspiel have tested positive and are self-isolating.

“Some of these individuals worked early last week before notification of the case associated with the event, and all contacts are being notified as per usual through local public health follow up. Some of these contact have been patients,” Hinshaw said during her daily COVID-19 update on Monday.

The government says all of their contacts are being notified.

The bonspiel in Edmonton took place March 11-14. Hinshaw says she spoke with one of the organizers about the measures taken to follow the COVID-19 guidelines that were in place at the time.

“Despite the measures, transmission took place and the key messages that we can take away from this event are that even mild symptoms – a minor sore throat or runny nose – can result in spread of infection, and that commonly touched surfaces like serving spoons at a buffet can be a mechanism for spread,” Hinshaw noted. “COVID-19 does not discriminate. All of us need to be vigilant with regular hand hygiene, staying home even with minor respirator symptoms, and keeping unwashed hands well away from our face.”
