Some Alberta child care centres to reopen for core service workers

The Government of Alberta will begin to reopen select licensed child care centres to provide care for core service workers.

Up to 15,000 spaces will become available.

“All Albertans are relying on those who are working in core service areas like health care. That’s why we want to make sure child care is available for those who need it during this crisis,” says Rebecca Schulz, Minister of Children’s Services.

Initial selection of centres will be based on proximity to health care facilities, and will reopen starting the week of March 23.

“We are ready and able to contribute to this important effort,” Anil Karim, executive director of Kids U says. “We will ensure our staff strictly follow the health guidance we’ve received and parents can rest assured that while they are at work, their kids are safe and cared for.”

Access will be prioritized to health care practitioners and critical infrastructure workers. Additional spaces will then become available to first responders, and others. Parents will be notified through their employer if they qualify for a spot.

Centres will be limited to 30 people, including staff, and must adhere to strict sanitization practices. Parents will still receive subsidies if they qualify.

As previously announced, all other licensed child care centres are to remain closed, though day homes may be open with a limit of six children, not including the operators’ own children.
