Queens Soccer brings in six new players

The Red Deer College Queens soccer team has signed six new players ahead of the 2020 ACAC season, which typically runs August through October.

The players are Sofia Quinteros of Edmonton, Paige Kalbfleisch of Sherwood Park, Natassia Wright of Red Deer, and three players from Fortaleza, Brazil; Ingrid Sousa, Arielly Lima, and Amanda Silva.

“This is very talented group of incoming student athletes and we cant wait to get started,” says Head Coach Esad Elkaz. “These student-athletes all bring great qualities to Queens soccer, both on and off the field and that’s vital to the high standard we are trying to set here at RDC Athletics.

“It was very exiting to see the growth of this young team this past season and we know this new collection of student athletes will only add to that.”

The Queens will look to bounce back from a 4-8-0 season after going 8-2-2 the season prior.

Elkaz also acknowledged the commitment it takes to be an elite student-athlete.

“Student athletes have entirely different responsibilities than what regular students do not have to keep track of. So many things come into play such as workouts, practices, games, study hours, eating, recovery, rest and free time,” he says.

“It is important for student-athletes to practice wise time management in order to succeed academically. socially and athletically.”

Kalbfleisch, a senior at Bev Facey Community High in Sherwood Park, says she chose RDC because of the good things she’d heard about its nursing program.

“Right now I’m not too sure where I want to go with soccer. I want to play and have fun with the game, but see where nursing takes me first before a soccer career,” she says.

Edmonton’s Quinteros, who is a club teammate of Kalbfleisch, is also looking forward to the nursing program, and had options stateside. She adds that the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre was a big factor in choosing what will soon be Red Deer University.
