Officials with Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools (RDCRS) say students from École Secondaire Notre Dame High School successfully participated in their grad service project week, just ahead of schools being closed-off to students on Monday.

The annual Grad Service Project week this year aims to raise funds for the Kerry Wood Nature Centre at the Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary.

From March 9-13, teams containing a teacher and six students worked together to compete in challenges and earn points.

According to school officials, prizes were awarded to the teams that earned the most points and raised the most money.

During the week, students were involved in a series of challenges to help raise funds that included a team name and banner challenge on Monday, building structures with pallets on Tuesday, cookie dough race on Wednesday, and lunchtime s’more challenge on Thursday.

This year’s goal is to raise $40,000 for the Kerry Wood Nature Centre. Each year, the graduating class from École Secondaire Notre Dame High School chooses a charity to raise funds for through their Grade Service Project.

The school’s annual Grad Service project allows students the opportunity to make a lasting difference in the community.

School officials point out the students are leaders throughout the entire project, as they select the charity, work closely with the organization to educate others, and create activities to raise both money and awareness.

“I am so proud of this group of students and the skills they have developed to be lifelong stewards, says Principal, Rose McQuay, in a release.”
