Facebook page made to help Red Deerians during COVID-19 crisis

A Facebook page with nearly 1000 members is helping central Albertans share ideas and the latest info as it pertains to COVID-19.

Red Deer COVID-19 Volunteers was recently created by local resident Christina Buddle, who says she started the group so that none of her fellow citizens would feel alone.

“It’s about communication and connection with the community, and using social media for good,” she says. “It’s there so that everyone who needs help finds someone who is able to offer it.”

The page has become a source for several things, including local news articles about COVID-19, offers to deliver groceries for someone unable to get to the store, and other helpful information such as how to best practice social distancing.

“Being in isolation or being quarantined is quite nerve-wracking for some. For the folks who are self-isolating and the ones who have immunodeficiencies, they have reached out and the response from the group has been great,” Buddle continues.

She admits it’s been easier for her to run the group because she isn’t facing the same health or socioeconomic issues that many others are.

“I think most are struggling, especially the ones that don’t have a guaranteed income and have to work to pay bills,” she says, adding that those people should take advantage of others’ kindness during this tough time.

“For some, asking for help is hard, but during this time, people need to reach out. My group has no judgement, just information and kind-hearted people willing to go the extra mile.”

The City of Red Deer has also launched a COVID-19-centric page with a focus on how to remain active and fun with your family while staying at home.
