There’s at least one outdoors option available to Red Deerians who aren’t self-isolated due to the COVID-19 situation.

Skiing and hiking trails at River Bend Golf and Recreation Area, with management saying ski trails will continue to be groomed as weather permits.

Park hours are 9 a.m. to 9pm daily through until March 31. Starring April 1 hours they’ll be open dawn to dusk.

As of Thursday, the clubhouse at River Bend is closed to the public. Portable toilets will be located in the west parking lot for visitors to use.

Staff will be on-site Monday – Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. getting ready for the start of the golf season.

“Hopefully by then we have a better understanding of what we are dealing with so we get out and enjoy everything River Bend has to offer,” General Manager Rob McPherson said in an email update. “We are planning for golf season like we normally do and we are expecting to open the Driving Range and Golf Course when weather permits.”

McPherson says clubhouse and food and beverage operations are up in the air and may be delayed, noting River Bend will follow all recommendations of Alberta Health Services and the City of Red Deer to ensure public safety.

“Get down here and enjoy our wide open spaces we are seeing more traffic now that we have all winter as we are about the only recreation option in town,” McPherson said.
