C.P. Blakely School student named Stollery Children’s Hospital Champion

It has been a few years since Kaden Howard recovered from serious injuries at the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton following a near-fatal accident.

Kaden has since bounced back into action and was proud to be named a Champion by the hospital. He was excited when they sent a film crew to his school (C.P. Blakely) in Sylvan Lake, and he even enlisted his friend Ethan Morgan to be part of the feature!

“It’s been sort of fun learning new things,” he said, becoming particularly engrossed with the high-end camera used for recording his story.

For his mom, Kristi-Lee, his designation as a Champion is significant.

“From a mother’s perspective, I think this has been a huge part of the healing process for him. All the people being inspired by him is helping him move ahead from the accident. It’s an honour and a gift we’re able to give.”

Kaden was 9-years-old when he was enjoying the May Long Weekend at the lake. He stopped with his family to fuel up his quad before taking it out for the day, when suddenly it caught on fire and engulfed him in flames.

Miraculously, Kaden survived the fire and was airlifted to the Stollery where he spent several weeks in the pediatric intensive care unit – including 52 days in isolation. His treatment included several grafting surgeries to treat the burns that covered 70 per cent of his body from the neck down.

Due to the severity of his injuries, Kaden’s doctors expected him to be at the Stollery until that November. But Kaden pushed himself to walk as soon as he could and was eventually discharged in September.

Kaden returned to school just three days after being discharged and hit the ice one month later with his hockey team.
