Trudeau says economic measures coming, Parks Canada facilities closing

Mar 17, 2020 | 10:20 AM

OTTAWA – The message from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Tuesday morning stressed the need for Canadians to stay safe by enacting social distancing practises and to help their neighbours by doing so.

“Canada, let’s work together,” said Trudeau from the front lawn of his official residence in Ottawa where he is in self-isolation following his wife’s diagnosis with COVID-19.

“Stay home. Don’t go out unless you absolutely have to,” said Trudeau.

Details of domestic aid packages weren’t yet available. Trudeau said he expects to make a major announcement on economic actions on Wednesday.

What aid was announced was a $5,000 loan program for Canadian travellers who require financial assistance to either get back to the country or shelter in place.

Additionally, when it comes to Parks Canada facilities, “anything with a door will be closed,” said Trudeau.

Trudeau says the Emergencies Act is a tool the federal government can use to enact measures it would otherwise not be able to enact.

He says the Liberal government is looking at other ways to impose new measures without calling a state of emergency.

Trudeau also says that with three million Canadians living or travelling abroad at any time, it would not be possible to expect that everyone would be able to come home immediately.

Trudeau also says Canada is in a good fiscal position to be able to invest in Canadian individuals and businesses to make sure the country gets through this difficult time and continues to “prosper and grow” once this moment is over.
