RDC classes going online starting Wednesday

Mar 15, 2020 | 3:36 PM

NOTE: This story was published prior to the announcement Sunday afternoon by the provincial government that all post-secondary classes in Alberta are cancelled, effective immediately, until further notice.

This means the cancellation now includes all Apprenticeship classes within RDC’s School of Trades and Technologies.

RDC plans to begin online and remote delivery of RDC’s classes starting Wednesday, March 18.

Red Deer College’s main and downtown campuses will remain open, and all employees are expected to attend work.

Red Deer College will go online to provide classes to all students for the rest of the current semester.

Classes will not take place on March 16 and 17 as staff prepare for the transition to online. The change is made necessary by the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic.

“With the breadth of programs and courses offered by RDC, a common solution of providing online delivery in all cases is not possible,” a release states. “Classes and labs within RDC’s School of Trades and Technologies will continue in-person on Monday and Tuesday, given the hands-on components involved in these courses.”

March 16 and 17 classes are NOT cancelled for trades and technologies students.

Dr. Peter Nunoda, President of Red Deer College, says we are in unprecedented times.

“I appreciate the massive efforts of RDC’s committed employees who have been working to help keep our College community safe. By shifting to online course delivery, where we can, it will help to prevent the spread of any illnesses, including COVID-19, within our community,” he says.

“RDC’s academic teams and faculty are all committed to finding creative solutions to ensure that our students can complete their studies successfully.”

Summary:

• In-person classes: are cancelled on Monday and Tuesday for students at RDC’s main and downtown campuses except for students in the School of Trades and Technologies. If you are in Trades and Technologies, please come class.

• Online classes: Students taking online classes currently should continue with their classes, as scheduled, on Monday and Tuesday

RDC joins a number of other Alberta institutions to cancel classes and provide them in an alternate manner, including the University of Calgary, the University of Alberta, Burman University in Lacombe, Grant MacEwan University, NAIT, and SAIT.

Olds College has not yet announced any changes.

Red Deer College has implemented a variety of protocols, including increased cleaning and sanitizing of high-traffic areas (such as classrooms and washrooms), to help ensure the health and safety of our students, employees and visitors.

All large events at RDC’s main campus, including the Harris Centre, as well as those at the downtown campus and Welikoklad Event Centre are cancelled. This includes events hosted by external organizations.

RDC says it continues to monitor the fluid COVID-19 situation, and will provide updates as information becomes available. Information will continue to be housed on RDC’s Novel Coronavirus webpage, located at rdc.ab.ca/coronavirus.

This story will be updated if any new information becomes available.
