Changes are happening later this month with the Canadian Mental Health Association’s (CMHA) Recovery College programming in Red Deer.

The program’s various courses, and other mental health programming offered by CMHA are relocating to a new building downtown at #303, 4805 48 Street. The building is called the Mid City Plaza.

“Courses are typically eight weeks long, but we have recently been able to add courses which are three to four weeks, and since then our enrolment has doubled,” says Christine Stewart, executive director at CMHA in Red Deer.

Courses include Conversations that Matter, Finding Your Balance, and the Art of Friendship. Around 100 unique individuals have registered for courses in Red Deer since in launched here last September.

Recovery Colleges offer these free courses which are designed for people who have experienced mental illness and wish to learn specific skills for managing their health.

Nationwide, in 2018-19, 98 per cent of Recovery College clients reported they felt a greater sense of belonging after going through a course.

CMHA announced this week it is partnering with the Ontario Shores Centre to support the expansion and creation of 20 new recovery colleges in the next year.

The program is currently available in 12 communities across Canada, including Red Deer, Lethbridge, Fort McMurray, Edmonton and Calgary.

CMHA in Red Deer will maintain its main office on Little Gaetz.
