Friday marked the kick-off to the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation’s (RDRHF) 23rd annual Hospital Lottery.

This year’s dream home is a 2,927 sq. ft. bungalow built by Sorento Custom Homes, located at 121 Larratt Close and valued at $840,000.

This year’s lottery features 102 prizes valued at over $1 million, in addition to a MegaBucks 50/50 draw that includes a million dollar jackpot.

Manon Therriault, CEO for the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation, says the lottery has raised over $9 million for new equipment at Red Deer’s hospital since it started more than two decades ago.

“2020 Hospital Lottery proceeds will be used to purchase critically-needed ventilators for the hospital, which is quite fitting, given what we’re experiencing right now,” she exclaims. “Mechanical ventilators require a complex, computerized equipment that breaths for patients unable to adequately breathe on their own. So this equipment will be used in intensive care, the operating room, the emergency department on a daily basis for adults, pediatric and neonatal populations.”

Therriault notes there are over 10 ventilators that need to be replaced at Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre (RDRHC), with hopes that this year’s lottery ticket sales can cover those costs.

One aspect of this year’s lottery Therriault is especially excited about is the MegaBucks 50/50 draw.

“It’s something we’ve never done before,” she points out. “We know that hosting events right now with a large group of people getting together is not really an option for us. So it’s nice to be able to have such a really great event to be able to continue to support our hospital, and have that equipment that we still direly need.”

Therriault says there are many people to thank in making the lottery a success, and also possible each year.

“Our partnership with our sponsors, our donors, our volunteers, and the staff, enable us to provide state of the art equipment that would not be here without the efforts and the collaborations,” adds Therriault. “So we sincerely thank all of our ticket purchasers for the support in this lottery.”

Dan Daneault, Construction Manager at Sorento Custom Homes echoes those comments, acknowledging the community support that’s needed each year to make the lottery a success.

“Events like this don’t happen without many supports through the suppliers and the trades,” he explains. “They do a lot of donations, so a big part of this project coming together is due to the trades and the suppliers that donate their time and materials, and their efforts to have this all come together. Hopefully everybody enjoys what they see.”
