Red Deer Mayor Tara Veer, on behalf of city council, issued the following statement Friday afternoon in regards to the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

“As Red Deerians, I know many of our citizens are increasingly concerned about COVID-19 in our city, and on behalf of City Council and staff, I urge our citizens to follow direction from our Provincial Health Authorities, as is The City of Red Deer in relation to COVID-19.

“The City of Red Deer has activated our Emergency Operations Centre protocol to continue making decisions on this evolving situation and our response in Red Deer. However, we, as an organization, continue to implement based on the direction of Alberta Health Services. Our primary goal is the safety of our residents. We are working closely with many community partners on this front.

“We encourage citizens to practice social distancing and proper hand washing practices, as advised by Alberta Health Services, so all of Red Deer can remain safe, particularly those at most risk to infection, including older adults and individuals with underlying medical conditions.

“Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health holds a daily news conference with the most up to date information. The City will communicate decisions as we make them in alignment with the direction of Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health.

“Please tune in daily to this news conference and follow their web page for accurate information. https://www.alberta.ca/coronavirus-info-for-albertans.aspx
