RDC Kings Hockey battle MacEwan in ACAC playoffs

The Red Deer College Kings will host the MacEwan University Griffins in game one of the best-of-three semi-finals Friday at 7 p.m. at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

It promises to be an even matchup as the Kings (20-6-2-0) finished second in the league while the Griffins (20-7-1-0) were just one point behind in third.

The Kings earned four out of a possible eight points in head-to-head regular season competition versus MacEwan, with two contests going to double-overtime.

RDC had the ACAC’s top powerplay (24.3%) in the regular season and killed off 83.8% of their shorthanded situations. MacEwan’s powerplay clicked at a 16.4% rate while their penalty kills was 89.6%.

Over 28 games, the Kings scored 4.36 goals per game. Sylvan Lake’s Chase Thudium led the way with 17 markers and 36 points. Defenceman Tyler Podgorenko had 27 points in 27 games.

Fifth-year centre Dylan Thudium recorded 26 points. Captain Scott Ferguson contributed 12 goals and 22 points.

The Griffins averaged 4.72 goals per game. Cam Gotaas was their offensive leader with 40 points.

Both squads ranked among the top three teams defensively. RDC allowed 2.88 goals against per game and MacEwan let in 2.29 goals.

Game two of the playoff series goes Saturday night (6 p.m.) at MacEwan. Game three, if necessary, goes Sunday at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre at 5 p.m.
