Indoor track stars land RDC Athlete of the Week honours

Red Deer College Athletics is proud to announce the Bedford Food Company Athletes of the Week:

Shayla Sklaruk – Queens Indoor Track
Hometown – Stony Plain, AB
Bachelor of Education Middle School (2nd year)

Sklaruk was instrumental in the RDC Queens Indoor Track team earning top spot at Running Room Grand Prix #2 this past Saturday at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre. The Queens accumulated 58 team points, six more than the second place MacEwan University Griffins.

Sklaruk, a talented second-year runner from Stony Plain, won the women’s 600 metre final by over four seconds (1:38.30) with a personal best time. Sklaruk (3:12.09) had another strong race, placing second over 1,000 m. Then to wrap up the day, the Bachelor of Education Middle School student was a key component in the RDC Queens (1:56.62) finishing the fastest in the 4 x 200 m final.

Stephen Rowley – Kings Indoor Track
Hometown – Caroline, AB
Open Studies (3rd year)

On Saturday, Rowley helped lead the Red Deer College Kings Indoor Track team to a first place standing at Running Room Grand Prix #2 in another heart-and-soul effort. The Kings totaled 56 team points, 19 ahead of the second place SAIT Trojans (37).

In the first grand prix hosted at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, the dedicated third-year (2:42.41) was first in the men’s 1,000 m final. Rowley, who is from Caroline, helped guide the Kings (1:40.49) to third spot in the 4 x 200 m relay. The Open Studies student (1:29.79) also finished fifth over 600 m, only 0.61 seconds out of third.

On March 21 and 22, Sklaruk, Rowley and the RDC team will compete at the ACAC Indoor Track Championships in Edmonton.
