Delburne to get fiber optic internet by the fall

Mar 9, 2020 | 3:52 PM

The Village of Delburne has announced it will become the smallest community in Alberta to have one gigabyte internet service.

In partnership with Red Deer County, the village will introduce fiber optic high speed internet to the community by fall 2020.

Red Deer County amended its budget from $2 million to $4 million this year to make the project happen. On March 3, Delburne council amended its capital budget and capital plan to make a $1.15 million investment of its own, which will be covered by grants and borrowing.

“We sincerely appreciate all that Red Deer County has done as this project would not be available to us without them,” says Delburne Mayor Bill Chandler.

“Delburne council and administration believe the fiber optic network is a valuable investment in the community’s future as it will provide residents and businesses with state-of-the-art internet access,” a release continues.

Increased communication, a reliable network and a boost in economic development opportunities are expected to be just a few of the benefits of providing fiber optics to residents and business owners.
