The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) has recognized Chris Leeming of the Olds College Broncos as the Women’s Hockey Coach of the Year.

In his third season behind the bench at Olds College, the team didn’t have a sparkling record, but displayed great growth in many areas.

For example, shots allowed went from 814 in his first year as head coach in 2017-18, to 765 in 2019-20.

As well, penalty minutes dropped each season, from a league-high of 298 in 2017-18 to 255 minutes in 2019-20. Goals went from 30 to 40, over the 24 game season, assists from 40 to 61, powerplay efficiency from 5.1 per cent to 11.2 per cent, and shorthanded goals from one to an ACAC high of three.

“Chris has done a tremendous job with the Broncos women’s hockey program over the past three seasons,” Broncos Athletics Manager Trina Radcliffe said. “He is highly respected by his peers and we are extremely proud of Chris and the team’s achievements over the past few years. His dedication to making every player better is what sets him apart from other coaches. He works hard to ensure each athlete has an opportunity to be successful and challenges them to find it within themselves to achieve goals.”

Originally from Harrow, ON, Leeming was previously an assistant coach with the University of Windsor women’s hockey team in the OUA conference of U Sports from 2013-2017. He has also held coaching roles for the Alberta Winter Games, and the Team Alberta U18 Selection Camps in 2018 and 2019.

Leeming has a B.A. Honours Degree in Criminology and Political Science, as well as a Bachelor of Education degree.
