Preparing To Break Ground

Prep work continues for new high school in Blackfalds

Initial design services and site investigation work will soon be getting underway on a new high school in Blackfalds.

That, according to Town officials who recently met with representatives from Alberta Education and Alberta Infrastructure.

Mayor Richard Poole says council received an update on the project’s status last week.

“They discussed the area, the type of building that they might be looking at, how much area it would take, and everything that would be supporting that design,” says Poole. “Wolf Creek (Public Schools) is in charge of programming for that school, but we’ll all be working really hard to make sure that they provide a comprehensive school that will allow for spaces within the school to provide a variety of different courses.”

According to Town documents, the land designated for the new high school is 5.24 acres directly south of Iron Ridge Intermediate Campus. Government officials have confirmed that design approvals are in place for a student population of 855, with a public-private partnership, or P3 being the likely process for the school’s build.

It has also been determined that the number one capital priority for Wolf Creek Public Schools (WCPS), would likely be a two story facility. However, both the Town and school district will be involved in the school’s design through upcoming engagement and pre-development meetings.

There is currently no high school in the Town of Blackfalds, with students presently bussed to Lacombe Composite High School for their senior years.

WCPS has three existing schools in Blackfalds, including Iron Ridge Elementary Campus, Iron Ridge Intermediate Campus, and Iron Ridge Junior Campus.

Poole says both the Town and WCPS are now waiting on word from the government as to when shovels can hit the ground.
