Marilyn Gladu visits Red Deer on Conservative leadership campaign tour

Mar 4, 2020 | 10:50 AM

Marilyn Gladu is one of the Conservative members of parliament running to become the leader of her party.

The MP of Sarnia-Lambton in Ontario since 2015 made a stop in Red Deer on Tuesday to talk with constituents about the state of the current government.

A major point that came up, she says, was how Justin Trudeau has alienated the economy in the west.

“The platform that I have will work to restore prosperity in the west. There are farmers who have been negatively impacted by our relationship with China and are looking for solutions,” explained Gladu.

“Until we restore prosperity to the west, I think there will continue to be alienation. The first thing we need to do is get pipelines built to the coast so we can take full advantage of our oil and gas market.”

Gladu comes with over 32 years of global business experience working as a chemical engineer for major oil and gas companies. She was the leader of Dow Chemicals overseeing 254 plants in 20 different countries, as well as the director of engineering and construction at the Suncor refinery.

She has assumed a number of roles within the Conservative party since being elected, including Shadow Minister of Health in 2019.

“The carbon tax doesn’t work. BC has had one for ten years and they’ve dropped less than one percent of their emissions,” added Gladu. “We can’t bankrupt the Canadian economy on behalf of the environment, but there’s an opportunity for us to lead at home. I have strategies to address the top emissions in Canada so we can meet our Paris targets, but beyond that so we can leverage our technology and natural resources in the world so we can actually generate jobs and prosperity for Canadians as well as solving the global climate issue.”

When asked about rural crime, a pressing issue in central Alberta, Gladu said the actions of the Liberal government will only hurt lawful gun owners, and there is nothing being done to reinforce the rule of law in the country.

Gladu is the third Conservative leadership hopeful to visit Red Deer after Peter Mackay and Erin O’Toole made stops here last month.
