Holmes, Toze named RDC Athletics Athletes of the Week

Red Deer College Athletics is proud to announce a pair of volleyball players as the Bedford Food Company Athletes of the Week.

Emma Holmes had a very impressive performance at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Volleyball Championship in Medicine Hat.

The 5’10” outside hitter played a pivotal role in the RDC Queens earning silver.

In the final against the Briercrest College Clippers, Holmes helped the Queens push the Clippers to five sets (25-21, 20-25, 25-20, 23-25 and 12-15). In the match, the Bachelor of Kinesiology student was strong offensively and defensively, totaling 13 kills, 20 digs, two blocks, one ace and one assist. Holmes was also recognized as an ACAC Championship Tournament All-Star after three strong matches.

The Queens opened the weekend with a sweep over the Lakeland College Rustlers (25-18, 25-22 and 25-16). The second-year contributed 11 kills and 13 digs, while swinging for a 0.375 hitting percentage.

Then in the semi-final, the Red Deer College Queens downed the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings in straight sets (25-22, 25-21 and 25-22). Once again, the Red Deer native was a positive factor, contributing a game-high 14 kills, nine digs, four blocks and an assist. She was named the Queens Player-of-the-Game.

Holmes and the Red Deer College Queens will play in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Volleyball National Championship from March 12-14 in Quebec City. The Cégep Garneau Elans are the hosts.

Meanwhile, Pat Toze had a remarkable weekend at the ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championship in Lethbridge.

The third-year helped guide the Kings to ACAC gold.

Toze recorded 15 kills, four digs, two stuff blocks, one ace and one assist in the RDC Kings’ four set championship victory over the host Lethbridge College Kodiaks (23-25, 25-19, 25-20 and 25-23). The 6’4” outside hitter made such an impact he was selected the ACAC Championship Tournament MVP.

The RDC Kings downed The King’s University Eagles in four sets to open the championship (25-20, 25-10, 23-25 and 25-20). The Bachelor of Kinesiology student had a game-high 17 kills along with four digs and three aces. Toze was efficient, finishing with a 0.419 hitting percentage. He was selected the RDC Player-of-the-Game.

In the semi-final, the Red Deer College Kings swept the Briercrest College Clippers (25-20, 25-13 and 25-19). Toze had another great game, totaling 12 kills, five digs, two stuff blocks and one ace. Increasing his hitting percentage (0.588) in the match, the talented student-athlete from Brisbane, Australia was a force again, and was named the Kings Player-of-the-Game.

Toze and the RDC Kings will compete in the CCAA Men’s Volleyball National Championship in Fredericton, N.B from March 12-14. The St. Thomas University Tommies are hosting the event.
